LIGHT

light003

Light,
do you remember
when we first met?

When I gazed
into your dark water,
in search of my
reflection.

Had you been there
all the time, I asked,
as you reached out to
cradle newborn shadows?

I still wonder
who else is there,
hiding?

Am I there, too?

Darkness

light001

Darkness,
did you know,
when we emerged,
where our footsteps
would take us?

Did you watch,
as paint strokes
settled on your face,
dancing to an
unknown song?

Were you there,
when we kindled
a fire in your heart,
and when beauty
unveiled its eyes?

Is it hidden in you
the secret of all this light?

BLURRED WORLD

BLURRED WORLD

Are you waving
as I pass you by
on this high-speed
tour bus ride

where
each arrival
departs in a frenzy
and a thousand new
vapour trails appear
in a haze

the guide up front
merges landmarks
with words, rushing
to finish what was
never begun

while I fumble
with my camera
for a good shot of
these blurred
lines

so I can
later abide time
in a room full of maps,
holding tightly to the
memory of a place
I never found

– tell the driver
to slow down, I shout,
before noticing my foot
on the accelerator and
the wheel grasped
in my hands

I brake
and the flow of words
comes to a stop as the
guide gestures out over
the side with newly
contented eyes

Yes
you are waving –
you were waving
the whole time.

DOORSTEP

DOORSTEP

Listen,
someone is there
out on the doorstep,
waiting to come in
from the cold.

Is it you,
with your countless
unfamiliar faces,
and your menagerie of songs
to ward off
the darkness?

Is it me,
with directions
scrawled on my tongue,
navigating confusion
towards a place that
cannot be found?

LINGERING

feb 01.jpg

LINGERING

we each stood there
in another’s shadow,
glancing at phones or
the clock in the sky

is this an arrival
or a departure? I asked,
as they moved swiftly on
towards another time

they left
the moment they arrived,
while I lingered by the road,
not knowing which way to turn,

looking for a way out
or perhaps a way in –
either seemed true,
but neither truly possible
